    Question

What experiences have you had transferring Super 8 to DV? I recently shot a 7 minute film and I want to edit picture and sound in DV format. I have access to editing equipment at work (currently Adobe Premier but shortly Final Cut Pro). I'm interested in showcasing it on one of the Internet film sites, i.e. ifilm.com
I live in LA and heard that Yale does it. I saw their work. It looked okay but the blacks came out grey. I heard you can have them monitor the transfer at a higher rate.
Do any of you have experiences with the above?

The lab that I use will transfer to a bunch of DV formats--CinePost in Atlanta. The question is do you want a RANK transfer? Do you want to go to Mini-DV, DVCPro, DigiBetaCam, or any of the others out there? The best bet is to always get the best transfer possible--we are talking about what you just spent all of your time and money shooting and getting the best you could right off the bat, right? I have used a few of the high end DV formats like DigiBetaCam and DVCPro but I still prefer BetaCam SP right now although BetaCam SX has a bit more felxibility. If you have any questions just Email me. Good Luck.

    Daniel,

I think what my friend Nigel seems to miss in your post (and several others it seems) that the reason you're asking about transfer to MiniDV is because that's what you have ACCESS to. BetaSP may be great but if it just sits in the can it doesn't matter, right?
You're wanting to shoot super8, transfer to minidv, zoom it in to your comp. via firewire, edit and do effects in premiere and export that as mpeg2 or streaming, right?
If you have the money, get the transfer done at RANK or in Atlanta to minidv, if not, get the ambico home unit(49.95)and do the transfer with a minidv camcorder...it WILL flicker (Use de-flicker in premiere) and you WILL need to do color correction BUT it will work...and it doesn't look terrible despite what our friends say here..sure a RANK transfer to BetaSP edited linear would look better...but this answers the question you asked..not the ones that people seem to want to answer smile

    Do it for you!
    Brad

Does anyone know how the DVcam format compares to MiniDV, D5, BetaSP,DVCpro, DigiBetacam, any other formats in terms of resolution (DPI)? A provider in Melbourne, VIC, Australia will do s8 -> DVcam for A$15/50ft.

    Cheers,
    Callum

Hi: Saw your post on http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/Forum239/HTML/000179.html

Can you tell me the contact details of the dubbing house you speak of? I have some 8mm film I wish to be transferred
(although the price seems a little too good to be true)

For descriptions as to this differences between the video formats you request see the site http://www.dv.com/casestudies/ and select the PDF of the May 1999 issue page 36 Video Tape Formats compared.

    Best Regards
    Tom
